We’ve learned the tricks we describe below over years of antenna testing and experimentation, in settings ranging from high-density urban areas to sprawling suburbs. The number of channels you receive might even change from day to day or week to week. There are just so many variables affecting the performance of an indoor TV antenna, and the design of the antenna plays only one part: The characteristics of your TV’s tuner, the construction of your home, the room you place the antenna in, the way you mount the antenna, trees and other outdoor objects that may block reception, and multipath interference caused by signal reflections from mountains, bodies of water, or buildings all can affect antenna performance. With that old one, I had it connected via coaxial cable to my old Magnavox ZV457MG9 DVD/VHS tape recorder, and that recorder was then connected by coaxial cable to my Dynex TV. Briefly had one of the new Cisco Contour HD receiver cable TV boxes to replace my obsolete Scientific Atlanta Explorer. For others, the process of tuning in over-the-air channels is an exercise in frustration. Some antenna owners find that they can just position the thing anywhere, run a channel scan, and have instant access to all their favorite local stations. This resembles the dilemma that cord-cutters face when they’re ditching their cable or satellite TV box in favor of an indoor TV antenna. Imagine if someone offered you a car for $1,000 that ran forever without fuel, but they couldn’t guarantee that it would get you to any of your favorite destinations. ![]()

The former is cognate with the words used for black in most modern Germanic languages aside from English ( German: schwarz, Dutch: zwart, Swedish: svart, Danish: sort, Icelandic: svartr). Swart still survives as the word swarthy, while blaek became the modern English black. These are parallelled in Middle English by the terms swart for dull black and blaek for luminous black. Old High German also had two words for black: swartz for dull black and blach for a luminous black. Ater has vanished from the vocabulary, but niger was the source of the country name Nigeria, the English word Negro, and the word for "black" in most modern Romance languages ( French: noir Spanish and Portuguese: negro Italian: nero Romanian: negru). The Ancient Romans had two words for black: ater was a flat, dull black, while niger was a brilliant, saturated black. Kuanos' could mean both dark blue and black. The Ancient Greeks sometimes used the same word to name different colors, if they had the same intensity. More distant cognates include Latin flagrare ("to blaze, glow, burn"), and Ancient Greek phlegein ("to burn, scorch"). The word black comes from Old English blæc ("black, dark", also, "ink"), from Proto-Germanic * blakkaz ("burned"), from Proto-Indo-European * bhleg- ("to burn, gleam, shine, flash"), from base * bhel- ("to shine"), related to Old Saxon blak ("ink"), Old High German blach ("black"), Old Norse blakkr ("dark"), Dutch blaken ("to burn"), and Swedish bläck ("ink"). According to surveys in Europe and North America, it is the color most commonly associated with mourning, the end, secrets, magic, force, violence, fear, evil, and elegance. It became the color worn by English romantic poets, businessmen and statesmen in the 19th century, and a high fashion color in the 20th century. In the 14th century, it was worn by royalty, clergy, judges, and government officials in much of Europe. In the Roman Empire, it became the color of mourning, and over the centuries it was frequently associated with death, evil, witches, and magic. It was used in ancient Egypt and Greece as the color of the underworld. īlack was one of the first colors used by artists in Neolithic cave paintings. Since the Middle Ages, black has been the symbolic color of solemnity and authority, and for this reason it is still commonly worn by judges and magistrates. Black and white have often been used to describe opposites such as good and evil, the Dark Ages versus Age of Enlightenment, and night versus day. It is often used symbolically or figuratively to represent darkness. It is an achromatic color, without hue, like white and grey. Those who have been following me for a while might know that I despise hidden object games. ![]() Then, I’ll break down each chapter into what worked and didn’t work, for those who are interested in seeing a more in-depth analysis of the puzzles. ![]() I’m going to try to touch upon these things vaguely first so as not to spoil the game too much for those who haven’t played. There are so many things it does right, but many things it does wrong that keep it from being the perfect adventure game. As I continued playing, I realized that this game could make a really great case study in puzzle design. It feels like so much time and effort was poured into the visuals of the game that they forgot about making it a proper puzzle adventure. To the developer’s credit, there is a little “bloop” sound when you tap on something interactive. This could have all easily been solved by the game saying “I can’t reach that from here” or something similar. I was ready to assume it was a glitch, but then I tried something I wasn’t sure I had yet and it worked. That’s even the case often in this game, which is what makes it even more frustrating when it doesn’t let you do that. Usually if you tap on something in a point-and-click adventure and the character can move there, the game will send them there, no matter where you are when you tap. No feedback to tell me I’m doing something wrong. I had to do something specific to get things rolling, but I had to be standing in a certain area for the game to recognize it. The next level brought even more rage, this time due to lack of feedback from the game. Unfortunately, this was only the start of my frustration. I ran around and around and around trying to figure out what I missed, but eventually someone had to tell me about that object so I could pass. There are eighteen sections in the game and I got stuck on the sixth because I didn’t notice a very crucial piece that blended into the background. Here’s a nice little clip of the Cyclist level that I made without any extra software or hardware:īut the game shoots itself in the foot sometimes with its artwork. The iCloud saves are flawless, allowing you to sync your devices and swap between them as often as you want. It’s the perfect game to pick up and play in short bursts or to sit on your couch with for hours. I’m glad that the dialogue is short and sweet, without long cutscenes to watch. I like that the game is broken up into bite-sized chunks, each of which you can revisit any time after you complete it. It seems like the perfect fit for iOS, even though it was originally designed for PCs. It follows a girl named Lumi on a search for her grandpa after he’s abducted from his home during afternoon tea. ![]() ![]() The phrase began to refer to non-marital unions a man interviewed in Mayhew's London Labour and the London Poor said, "I never had a wife, but I have had two or three broomstick matches, though they never turned out happy." Tinkers reportedly had a similar marriage custom, "jumping the budget", with the bride and groom jumping over a string or other symbolic obstacle. The Marriage Act 1836, which introduced civil marriage, was contemptuously called the "Broomstick Marriage Act" by those who felt that a marriage outside the Anglican church did not deserve legal recognition. This meaning survived into the early 19th century during an 1824 case in London about the legal validity of a marriage ceremony consisting of the groom placing a ring on the bride's finger before witnesses, a court official said that the ceremony "amounted to nothing more than a broomstick marriage, which the parties had it in their power to dissolve at will." Later examples of the term broomstick marriage were used in Britain, with the similar implication that the ceremony did not create a legally-binding union. If British practitioners never used a physical leap, Parry wonders how European-Americans and enslaved African Americans in the American South and rural North America learned about the custom. He describes correlations between the ceremonies of enslaved African Americans and those of the rural British, saying that it is not coincidental that two groups separated by an ocean used similar matrimonial forms revolving around a broomstick. In his book, Jumping the Broom: The Surprising Multicultural Origins of a Black Wedding Ritual, Parry writes that African Americans and British Americans had a number of cultural exchanges during the 18th and 19th centuries. Parry, however, contests the claim that no part of the British custom involved jumping. Probert says that the word broomstick was used in the mid-18th century in several contexts to mean "something ersatz, or lacking the authority its true equivalent might possess" because the expression broomstick marriage (a sham marriage) was in circulation, folk etymology led to a belief that people once signified an irregular marriage by jumping over a broom. ĭespite these allusions, research by legal historian Rebecca Probert of Warwick University has failed to find evidence of an actual contemporary practice of jumping over a broomstick as a sign of informal union. In 1789, the rumoured clandestine marriage between the Prince Regent and Maria Fitzherbert is cited in a satirical song in The Times: "Their way to consummation was by hopping o'er a broom, sir". A man brought his underage fiancée to France and discovered that it was as difficult to arrange a legal marriage there as in England, but declined a suggestion that a French sexton might simply read the marriage service before the couple because "He had no inclination for a Broomstick-marriage". Ī 1774 use in the Westminster Magazine also describes an elopement. The French text, describing an elopement, refers to the runaway couple hastily embarking on " un mariage sur la croix de l'épée" (literally "marriage on the cross of the sword") this was freely translated as "performed the marriage ceremony by leaping over a broomstick". The earliest use of the phrase is in the 1764 English edition of a French work. References to "broomstick marriages" emerged in England during the mid-to-late 18th century to describe a wedding ceremony of doubtful validity. The expression may also derive from the custom of jumping over a besom ("broom" refers to the plant from which the household implement is made) associated with the Romanichal Travellers of the United Kingdom, especially those in Wales. Possibly based on an 18th-century idiomatic synonym for a sham marriage (a marriage of doubtful validity), it was popularized with the introduction of civil marriage in Britain by the Marriage Act 1836. The custom is also attested in Irish weddings. It is most widespread among African Americans and Black Canadians, popularized during the 1970s by the novel and miniseries Roots, and originated in mid-19th-century antebellum slavery in the United States. Jumping the broom (or jumping the besom) is a phrase and custom relating to a wedding ceremony in which the couple jumps over a broom. ![]() ![]() "Marrying over the Broomstick", 1822 illustration of a "broomstick-wedding" by James Catnach ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Scyther and Pinsir are both Bug-type Pokémon. Oh and credit to the team behind the film for having Goro be mostly practical effects, again despite a budget that doesn’t really cover it… Also whoever made the decision to have the character select screen announcer recording of “Reptile!” being said when the character appears in human form should be patted on the back for a good job well done. Let’s also mention the now infamous theme that plays over the titles, and will be forever parodied and mentioned when it comes to not just Mortal Kombat as a series, but anything that involves two things fighting. How exactly did Christopher Lambert get cast as Raiden? There wasn’t exactly a lot of resemblance… They’re not afraid to show other-worldly powers (even if their budget doesn’t allow it, more often than not), the core plot of the game is kept intact, and even little unnecessary things, like when Shang Tsung introduces Sub Zero and Scorpion as his underlings, something that wasn’t the case in the game, he does so by saying “Sub Zero and Scorpion, bitter enemies powerless to resist my influence”, or something to that effect, as if they felt they had to give a valid excuse to those that knew the game’s lore. The fact that it tries to be so much closer to the games is definitely refreshing, especially compared to Street Fighter and Super Mario Bros. Second place goes to Christopher Lambert’s Raiden, who also has no restraints when it comes to acting OTT, but seemingly great restraints in actually fighting anybody… ![]() It’s so stupid… so gloriously, gloriously stupid. This combined with the stricter adherence to the original games means he’s declaring matches a “Flawless Victory”, or walking up to defeated foes, stealing their souls and declaring “Fatality!”.
